About Panchangam

A modern Hindu almanac combining classical Vedic tradition with precise astronomical calculations.

📖 What is Panchangam?

Panchangam (పంచాంగం) literally means "five limbs"pancha (five) + angam (limb). It is the traditional Hindu calendar and almanac that has been used for thousands of years to determine auspicious times for rituals, festivals, and daily activities.

The five limbs are the foundation of every timing decision in Hindu tradition:

1

Tithi (తిథి)

Lunar day — one of 30 phases in a lunar month, calculated from the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Every 12° of separation = one tithi.

2

Vaaram (వారం)

Day of the week — each ruled by a planet (Sunday→Sun, Monday→Moon, Tuesday→Mars, Wednesday→Mercury, Thursday→Jupiter, Friday→Venus, Saturday→Saturn).

3

Nakshatram (నక్షత్రం)

Lunar mansion — one of 27 constellations the Moon passes through. Each spans 13°20' of the zodiac. Key for muhurtam selection and birth charts.

4

Yogam (యోగం)

Combination — calculated from the sum of Sun and Moon sidereal longitudes. 27 yogams, each spanning 13°20'. Determines the nature and quality of a day.

5

Karanam (కరణం)

Half a tithi — 60 karanams per lunar month. Seven moving types repeat cyclically (Bava to Vishti), and four are fixed (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Nagava, Kimstughna).

Beyond the five limbs, the Panchangam also tracks Masam (lunar month), Paksham (fortnight), Samvatsaram (year name from the 60-year Jupiter cycle), Ruthuvu (season), and auspicious/inauspicious time windows like Rahu Kalam, Abhijit Muhurtam, and Brahma Muhurtam.

🧮 How This App Calculates

All astronomical calculations run in pure Python using algorithms from Jean Meeus' Astronomical Algorithms (2nd edition). No external ephemeris files. The app computes Sun and Moon longitudes via periodic correction series, applies the Lahiri ayanamsa to convert from the tropical to the sidereal (Vedic) zodiac, derives all 5 panchangam elements from those longitudes, and calculates location-specific sunrise/sunset to determine Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam, Gulika Kalam, and other time windows.

Accuracy: Sun ±0.01°, Moon ±0.02°, Ayanamsa ±0.01°, Sunrise/Sunset ±1 minute, Tithi boundaries ±2 minutes versus authoritative Vedic sources.

🪐

Planetary Positions & Live Planetarium

All 9 Navagrahas with their current rashi, nakshatram, degree, and retrograde status — plotted on a traditional South-Indian chart. Below it, a Live Planetarium sky wheel renders the real-time sidereal sky: a 12-rashi outer ring, a 27-nakshatra inner ring, color-coded glowing graha markers (with retrograde indicators), optional classical Jyotish drishti (aspect) lines, and a "My Houses" overlay that rotates the wheel to your Lagna so you can see exactly which bhava each planet is transiting right now. Auto-refreshes every 60 seconds.

📜

Birth Chart (Kundali)

Personal Vedic natal chart showing Lagna (ascendant), Janma Rashi, Janma Nakshatram with pada, all 12 houses, planetary placements, and current Vimshottari Dasha. Also includes Shadbala (6-fold planetary strength as virupa bars), the Navamsa (D9) divisional chart, auto-detected Yogas (Pancha Mahapurusha, Gaja Kesari, Raja, Dhana, Kemadruma, Kala Sarpa, and more with color-coded positive/negative/mixed cards), and a full Antardasha (Bhukti) breakdown of the current Mahadasha. Every section has an in-context ? help popup with 5-language explanations.

💑

Porutham Match

Ashtakoot Gun Milan — 8-factor marriage compatibility scored out of 36, with individual breakdowns for Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi. Plus additional South-Indian layers: Dasha Porutham (10-fold match), Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha) checked from Lagna/Moon/Venus with classical cross-cancellation rules, Dasha Sandhi transition warnings, and Papasamya (Papa Points) to quantify the malefic burden balance between both charts.

👶

Baby Name Suggester

Traditional Sanskrit-derived boy and girl names based on Janma Nakshatra Pada's starting syllable. All 27 nakshatras × 4 padas mapped per the classical BPHS convention.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Why do the festival dates differ from another panchangam I use?

Different panchangams use different ayanamsas (Lahiri, Raman, KP…), regional conventions (Amanta vs. Purnimanta), and sometimes tradition-specific rules for festival fixing. This app uses Lahiri + Drik Ganita + Amanta. For major ceremonies, defer to your family's traditional pandit.

What ayanamsa does this app use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the official standard adopted by the Government of India's Calendar Reform Committee. Value is computed dynamically for every date via Meeus' formula.

Is this Drik or Vakya panchangam?

Strictly Drik Ganita — every planetary longitude is computed from scratch using VSOP87 / Meeus periodic correction series for each date. No precomputed tables.

Does this work offline?

Yes — install the app to your home screen (PWA). Previously viewed days and the UI remain available offline. The AI Assistant and live features (IP geo, share) need a connection.

Is the Panchangam Assistant free? What does it know?

Free to use. It sees only the panchangam data currently displayed on your screen plus your question. It can explain what a tithi means, suggest auspicious windows, summarize a festival, or translate a term — all in your selected language.

Can I trust these calculations for muhurtams?

The astronomical math is accurate to within minutes and matches authoritative Vedic sources. However, a traditional muhurtam also considers family customs (gotra, kula devatha, samskaras), chart analysis, and regional practice. Use this app to shortlist dates, then confirm with a qualified pandit.

How do I contact you for feedback or issues?

Email madhukar.konda@gmail.com — feature requests, bug reports, regional-variant suggestions, and corrections are all welcome.
